70 Years of Excellence in Teacher Education

Our Proud History

The Government College of Education for Women has been rendering exemplary service in the field of teacher education since its establishment in 1956. For nearly six decades, the institution has been committed to fulfilling the aspirations of meritorious students, particularly those from economically disadvantaged and rural backgrounds. With a strong focus on academic excellence and social responsibility, the college has played a significant role in preparing dedicated and competent teachers for the state. The institution has earned distinction through visits by eminent personalities, including the former President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, and the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru K. Kamaraj. The alumni of the college serve with distinction in schools, colleges, and various administrative positions within the Department of Education across Tamil Nadu, reflecting the institution’s enduring legacy and impact.

1956

The college was established with the objective of promoting women’s education in post-independence India. It was inaugurated by the then Union Minister Mr. T. T. Krishnamachari in the presence of the then State Minister for Education, Mr. C. Subramaniam.

1973

The M.Ed. (Part-Time) programme was introduced and continued until 2000, in accordance with NCTE regulations.

1993

The institution expanded its academic and research profile with the introduction of M.Phil. (Part-Time) and Ph.D. (Part-Time) programmes.

2009

The M.Ed. (Full-Time) programme was launched with recognition from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).

2026

The Ph.D. programme (both Full-Time and Part-Time) was reapproved and affiliated with Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University.

Affiliated to Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University since 2008, previously with Bharathiar University and University of Madras.

NAAC Accreditation

Underwent NAAC assessment in 2001-2002 and 2007-2008, currently in the third cycle of assessment.

IQAC

Internal Quality Assurance Cell established in 2005, conducting regular meetings to enhance college functioning.
